America The Beautiful The Greatest Nation On Earth or the Greatest Illusion?

The most often stated comment in America and especially in American Politics is “America is the Greatest Country in the World”. Democrats and Republicans alike proclaim this statement and those who may believe otherwise are ridiculed.

Many feel or like to state that America is the Worlds Last Great Hope. Past presidente’ (Sorry -president) carried it a step farther some 30 years ago by saying or calling for a “government as good as the American people”.

Carter stated this when Watergate was fresh, and government our government had recently been disgraced however, when ever our government does something magnificent it is normally said in a way that alludes to the government being better than the average American.

Think back to World War II which we entered and which the population highly protested until Franklin Roosevelt smoothed the way and then Pearl Harbor made it almost unavoidable in the Peoples eyes. Look back on Civil Rights which Lyndon Johnson pushed in a huge fashion, and not only in the South but Nationwide. Even with this it still took 100 years to began to come to pass. Even as of late Obama and the health care reform as he with much opposition is trying to bring this “aid to us”.

At the end of the day we can easily see that government in America has inspired the people more than the people have inspired it’s government. Why? We are to busy bragging.

It is not wrong to have national pride. However a constant boosting as we see is insulting and many cases down right child like. The the bragging of a playground bully stating his family is better than your family. This could prove very troubling to our nation.

Stop and think about what this means. How or by what standards and measures do we rate countries? What determines it’s greatness over another nation?

Of course the United States of American has tremendous resources. The United States ranks number eight in Gross Domestic Product or GDP (Percentage wise). On the other hand according to the OECD (Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development) we have the largest inequity and poverty rate in the world other than Turkey and Mexico, and things are getting far worse. I find nothing to brag about here, but of course most do not even know these facts. Check it out—true!

You say, well we have a very high average or medium income! While this may be somewhat true if we do the proper research we will find that we rank fifteenth in the world as far as standard of living and these facts come from the Human Development Index at the United Nation. This is behind other countries like Norway, France, Australia, Canada, Belgium, and Portugal. Again, check my data.

You then may say we have one of the best educational systems in the world. After checking you will soon realize that according to the Education Policy Institute report that we rank thirteenth as far as it being affordable, and ranks eleventh in regards to twenty five to thirty four year olds who hold a high school diploma (percentage wise). In regards to education in the sciences we rank twenty second.

We also like to scream about having the best health care in the world. All the while the WHO or World Health Organization ranks us at thirty seven as for quality of health care, and we are the only Industrialize country in the world that has not adopted some sort of National Health Care system or affordable system which truly works well.

If by the data we are not the greatest then why do people want to come here? Mexicans come here to work in a better economy. Turkish folks go to Germany, and Indians and Pakistanis tend to go to England. While Arabs tend to go to France. This is merely a sign that the less fortunate seek out a stronger economy to work in. This is not just a phenomena we experience in America.

My point in this little exercise is to show that most every country has something to be proud of. We as Americans have no more right to boast any more than German, France or England if you go by the data.

Why is this dangerous to us? It leads to slothfulness, laziness, and procrastination, after all we have arrived right? We have greatness correct? As a result we are not motivated to progress or to strive toward “greater-ness”. Why, when we are already there?

There is something odd about a country whose elected officials have to constantly flatter their constituents and any criticism is a lack of patriotism however, that describes America this day and time. Every politician feels compelled to mimic Jimmy Carter’s words to the point where our alleged greatness has also become our national anthem.

It seems like ancient history, but Robert Kennedy hated to even stroke the pride of his own supporters, and he actually scolded supporters at one rally for being disrespectful of LBJ (Lyndon Johnson for those to young to associate the Initials). Kennedy stated; Johnson could not have done what he did in regards to the Vietnam war without the backing of the American people. Now consider what I said just now. Re-read the last bit.

We will not hear this type of talk from the politicians anymore. Nor will many Patriots express these words, because we are to weak, and to sensitive to hear truth. We rather point fingers to Washington. While there is much corruption in Washington, and in all governments we must realize we as a people have failed in our duties as well. We have become consumer gluttons, and far to materialistic. We cannot except the fact that we have played a part in allowing America to get where it is today. We have been and are to busy boasting!

“Arrogance in a person is very unbecoming. It is even less becoming of a nation. “Pride cometh before a fall”.

The fact we been living in a fool’s paradise. It may be that our government is as good as the American people, which is something that should highly concern everyone.

If this made no sense to you I suggest you re-read it, as it it very important.
